Obama's ancestral home
Since 2006, the village has received international attention, since it is the hometown of Barack Obama Sr, the father of current United States of America President Barack Obama. Barack Obama, Sr. is buried in the village. Some of their family members, including his paternal Step-grandmother Sarah Obama, still live in the village.
Due to Barack Obama's presidency the village is expected to be visited by many tourists from the US and other countries. The Kenyan government is promoting it as a tourist attraction of western Kenya. An Obama-themed museum is set to be built by the Kenyan government and opened in the village in 2009. A Nairobi-based cultural organisation will build the Dero Kogelo Library and Cultural Centre in the village. When the Current president was a sanator, he visited his ancestral home, and during presidential campaigns, Kogelo village seemed to wake up.
It certainly would be interesting to meet the people of this region. Very articulate, and intelligent. They make the doctors, lawyers, pilots, accountants of the Nation. They also respect their culture, and they are proud that through them, through their heritage, bloodline, a world leader was born, however you want to look at it, all they know is that President Obama is their son!!!
Brum Tours would like to take you all the way, to this little village.....and experience the magic of freedom and diversity, of the American dream. Remember, we can always change the sequence to suit you.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive JKIA airport where you will be received by Brum Tours & Travel, the owners of www.kenyaholidays.co.ke. Overnight at a Nairobi Hotel.
Day 2: Early Breakfast and early departure towards the Great Rift Valley with viewing stop break stopovers and a picnic lunch. Arrive in Kisumu at 5 pm. Relax after a long journey, (490km).Full board accommodation at a Kisumu hotel 3*
Day 3: After Breakfast , visit Kogelo the ancestral home of the late Barack Obama Snr. The Father to the current USA president. His Excellency President Barack Obama spend half a day visiting the schools, the health centre and Mama Sara's home (from a distance due to security concerns). Return to Kisumu for overnight and meals.
Day 4: After Breakfast, drive towards Lake Baringo stoping on viewpoints. Expect bird watching, hippos, boat ride to Central Island. Meals and overnight at Lake Baringo lodge.
Day 5: Easy breakfast and ready for a day trip to Lake Bogoria (see a brief on Lake Bogoria below). Dinner and overnight at Lake Baringo Lodge.
LAKE BOGORIA NATIONAL RESERVE
Lake Bogoria is dominated by the countless hot springs which pour boiling water into the sterile lake. Sterile, except for the massive flocks of Lesser Flamingos that flood into Bogoria each year. Millions of them have been recorded at peak times of the year and hundreds of thousands is common. Greater Famingo are also present, sometimes in thousands and Black-necked Grebe are usually present. Although no other birds could possibly stand the conditions that the Flamingos find rather pleasant (standing up to your knees in boiling, highly caustic, soda is guaranteed to strip the skin of most animals) there is, nevertheless, an abundance of raptors preying on the ready source of meat. Steppe Eagles, Fish Eagles and Tawny Eagles are present in amazing numbers. In fact, at times the eagles are so numerous you can see 8 or more in a single tree. Bogoria is also one of the places in Kenya which offers a reasonable chance of seeing the Greater Kudu.
Day: 6 After Breakfast, check out and drive slowly towards Lake Nakuru. Enjoy a game drive around the lake, expect to see the big 4: White Rhino, Leopard, Lion and buffalo. You will also expect to see many kinds of antilopes, and various birds. Meals and overnight at a lodge.
LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK
Lake Nakuru has a comparatively low concentration of salts (compared to the 'real' soda lakes) and it also supports a fish population. As a result the wildlife is very different although, in common with the other soda lakes, Nakuru is home to a very large population of Flamingos which go there to feed. In 1997 the lake was almost completely dried out, partly as a result of drought and partly as a result of large amounts of water being extracted upstream. The extremely heavy El Niño rains in 1998 saved the lake but the numbers of flamingoes are still not as high as they used to be. It is a marvellous place to see a wide range of waders including Avocet, while large rafts of Pelican can also be seen sweeping the water in unison (in a rather attractive pelican version of synchronised swimming!). Probably the best view of the lake is from Baboon Cliffs, the view alone is worth the drive but the road up to the cliffs also provides a chance to see a number of chats. Watch out for the baboons at the top, they'll grab anything they think might be edible. Lake Nakuru National Park is also home to the Kenyan Rhino conservation project - and so is an excellent place to see rhinos.
Day 7: Leave Lake Nakuru at check out time (10am). Continuing south down the Rift is Lake Elementeita. You will have a glimpse of the lake which is usually inhabited by large numbers of flamingoes and, not being as alkaline as Bogoria, by large numbers of other water birds. It has Kenya's only breeding colony of Great White Pelicans and Great Crested Grebe have been seen there too. Grey-crested Helmet-shrike and Jackson's Widowbird can be seen in the area around the Lake. You will arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon in your Hotel, ready for your flight either in the evening or early morning on the next day.
Pls. Note: This itinerary is standard It can be customized according to the clients' preference, and Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Mombasa can be added as an extension.

Tsavo East National Park - “The Theatre of the Wild..”
Friday, February 15th, 2008
Establishment history
Tsavo National Park was established on 1st April, 1948 with an area of 21,812 Km2 It is the largest Park in Kenya. In May 1948 Tsavo National Park was divided into East and West for administrative purposes. The two Parks are divided by Nairobi–Mombasa railway /road.
The Waliangulu and Kamba tribes used it as a hunting ground prior to gazettement. Dr. Krapf journeyed on foot through this area in 1848 crossing the Tsavo river on his way to Kitui – first European to see Mt. Kenya. Construction of the railway reached Tsavo river in 1898. During the construction of the bridge Lions (Man eaters of Tsavo) terrorized the workers, killing over 130 people before being killed by Col. Patterson.
During the World War I (1914-1918) British forces built fortresses along Tsavo river to counter threats from invading German forces from Tanganyika (present Tanzania) – whose intention was to blow up the Tsavo river bridge that was vital to British Communication. Captain Lugards a European explorer passed through the area on his way to Uganda and had a drop over at the Lugards Falls area.
Scenic features
Tsavo East is a very popular Park as is indicated by the high number of tourists. Some of the attractive scenic features include:
Large herds of elephants and other wildlife. it is easily accessible by road, air (light aircraft) and railway. The Park is a “catchments” for coast resorts’ visitors.
Popular legend of Tsavo “The Man-eaters of Tsavo”.
Yatta plateau – It is about 290Km long and is one of the worlds longest lava flows.
Lugards Falls on the Galana river – This is not a true falls but a series of rapids. Visitors can walk down to the river to view the rapids.
Mudanda rock – This is a long rock outcrop that is about 1.6Km long. There is a dam at the base. Animals can be seen drinking. Visitors can walk along the rock and enjoy a cool breeze as well as view wildlife at the base.
Aruba Dam - was built in 1952 across the Voi river. The dam attracts many animals and water birds can be seen at this dam.
Tsavo/Athi rivers confluence – when the two rivers join they form the Galana river.
Elephants, Rhinos, Hirola (Hunters Hartebeest).
Ongoing Tourist Activities
Game viewing.
Walking Safaris along the Galana.
Bird watching.
Tourist guidance while in Tsavo
The weather in Tsavo is pleasant most of the year. There are two rain seasons. The long rains generally come in March – May and the short rains from October – December.
It is forbidden to travel in an open vehicle while in the Park.
Stay in your vehicle all the time. Get out only at designated areas.
Off road driving is not allowed.
View the wildlife from a distance with binoculars.
Off road driving destroys vegetation, might kill wildlife and could interfere with the daily routine of animals. The tracks formed become an eyesore.
Animals have a right of way.
Do not harass them or make loud sounds – this might scare then and make them nervous.
Patience pays!
Remember not to litter.
Remember: Do not take away anything, but photographs and leave nothing behind but footprints.
Tsavo West National Park - “The Land of Lava, Man-eaters…”
Friday, February 15th, 2008
Tsavo West National Park covers 7065 km2, approximately 30% of Kenya’s area under parks, and contains a diversity of habitats, wildlife and a mountainous scenic landscape. The park is a vast expanse of savanna stretching from Mtito Andei, along the Mombasa-Nairobi road and south to the Tanzanian border. The North Eastern boundary along the Highway adjoins Tsavo East National Park, but Tsavo West has a more varied topography and a more diverse array of habitats than its neighbour.
The park’s habitats include open plains alternating with Savannah bush and semi desert scrub, acacia woodlands; rocky ridges and outcrops and more extensive ranges and isolated hills; belts of riverine vegetation; palm thickets and on the Chyulu hills, mountain forest.
There are numerous rocky outcrops and ridges and part of the park, towards the Chyulu Hills, is of recent volcanic origin with lava flows and ash cones including the Shetani lava flow, an example of a recent volacano.
In the far south western corner on the Kenya Tanzania border is Lake Jipe, part of which is in the park. This very attractive lake is fed by runoff from Mt. Kilimanjaro and the North Pare mountains. At Mzima Springs, in the North of the park, water that has filtered underground from the Chyulu Hills gushes from below a lava ridge into a series of clear pools.
Location: South Eastern Kenya, inland from Mombasa, and the altitude ranges between 200 - 1000m.
Climate: Temperature ranges from 20 - 30o C and rainfall from 200mm - 700mm.
Two ran seasons: Long rains - March/April & Short rains
Major Attractions

In the Ngulia area, a range of craggy hills reaches around 1800m and is heavily wooded. The southern sector consists of open grassy plains. The permanent tsavo river runs through the northern part of the park with a fringe of riverine Acacia elatior and Hyphaene compressa woodland. Lake Jipe is bordered by extensive beds to Typha and has large permanent swamps at its eastern and western ends. Mzima springs, is fringed by Raphia farinifera and Phoenix reclinata palms.
